The Book of The Lover

Treat me like the page of a book:
cover me over and again in words holding hidden
meanings only you can decipher.
Fill me with messages and codes until I am made a
collection of short stories and tall tales – a study in
human behaviour.

Make of me a dictionary of intimacy:
a series of moments shared and remembered.
A mystery unfolding a leaf at a time: enchanting
and delicate.

Bathe my pages in poetry until Braille and stencil
depict all you were, are and could be.
Leaf through me;
admiring shapes in the lettering;
reading chapters in each scar, each tear, each spillage.

Bind me in a scroll of text:
an alphabet of ink spanning every language.
Each rune and adjective containing a piece of
your history spelled out in memory.

Turn me over and inscribe your name on my spine –
bold and legible.
Silver ink that I may catch the light of whatever
space I am placed in.

Own me wholly and truly, for I am of you.

Treat me like a page of a book:
read on, and learn of yourself.

Dedication: Written in celebration of learning the art of intimacy; and in gratitude to the one who showed me first.

SO TELL ME: What do you think of this piece?

  • Did it engage you?
  • Does the meaning come across? Are there any images or lines you don’t understand or find unclear?
  • Are there obvious errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar?
  • Do you have any suggestions for revision?

Please be brutally honest in your assessments – good, bad or indifferent.
I don’t scare easily; and I really do want to hear what YOU have to say about my work.

Many thanks in advance for your time and your criticism.
