To aid me in learning the art of blogging, I have been exploring some of the writing challenges that WordPress offers. The Daily Prompts in particular have stirred the imaginative juices, but I’ve had to be realistic about how frequently I can write because I never know what state my body will be in on a daily basis. Instead, I have decided to have a go at some of them anyway and then post them on the site to get feedback about the work I produce. After all, there are a plethora of people out there who have been blogging for longer and I hope to use the thoughts, comments and feedback to help me develop my skills in this area.
And so without further ado, I present my first attempt. This is the Opening Chapter to My Autobiography.
Turning 30 was an amazing experience for me!
Firstly, because I could never envision it in my adolescent daydreaming. And secondly, because by the time I had reached that age, I had made myself into the kind of person I wanted to be.
But to know me, to truly understand how I came to be the person I am, you will need to look further back.
I was born to African parents in Ghana, West Africa.
I was born –
And with grey hair (A fact which would be a delight to me throughout my existence).
I was born the eldest of the three children that my parents would have together.
And I was born to two people whose past and future selves would require separate, full recordings in their own right.
Yes, I come from that kind of legacy.
I was born; which I consider to be a miracle in its own right.
And I have lived: which has been another miracle in the making.
These few pages that follow, are the truest recording I am able to make of what has happened to me during the thirty-eight years I have walked on this planet.
I don’t care whether you believe what is written here, or not.
I don’t really care whether you like what you read here, or not.
I make no apologies.
This is my story: all that I have seen, all that I have done and all that I have experienced.
All I ask is for a little of your time: as I present the story of the girl with skin the colour of earth; who would live a life beyond what the statistics would suggest.
