I found this shot one evening in a pub garden; on a rare night that I had been able to meet up with an old friend. The plant drew my eye because of the way it had been lit from underneath.
The way that the light draws out the details of the leaf – making the observer look again at something familiar and perceive new details seems poignant to me.
The image reminds me of my own broken body. Even in illness, my body is still a skilful example of how treacherously beautiful the human body can be. And in the midst of chronic illness, when I am overshadowed by pain and dysfunction, there are still people and moments that illuminate me: reminding me that I am still a creature of beauty and complexity – even though what I am experiencing is beyond my understanding.
