If you are looking for a particular area of work, the main poetry collections are presented as a symphony in three parts:

distinguishing Miles from Coltrane – a collection of work exploring topics that were and are, of significant interest and relevance to my personal growth.

tribute – a collection of work written for and/or about specific individuals.

theories and suspicions – a collection of work looking at more general subject matter.

Some of the pieces raise further contemplation for me and these are discussed in afterwords that follow the piece.

sick.note: A series of pieces discussing issues around my ongoing ill health.

gone fishin’: A selection of pieces I have written on, or about my travels.

A Farewell to The Giant

My dad is dead.

He died ten days ago. Funny thing was, we didn’t even know that he was seriously sick at the time. He went for some blood test results on the Thursday and they were concerned that his liver was enlarged and so they sent him to the local hospital. The doctor’s decided to admit him for a few days to complete follow-up tests.

At 3.15 on Sunday afternoon, we were told that he had cancer that had spread to his liver and kidneys and at 07.40 on Monday morning, he was pronounced dead.

Playful Banter

It’s funny how we tend to focus on the differences between the many peoples that call this planet home. But when you travel, you catch glimpses of the many elements that are repeated from one group to another.

Fractured Reflections

This week, WordPress is encouraging us to ‘forego the straightforward in favour of the twisting and winding’. And so I’m offering up the ceiling of the Great Court at the British Museum.

Slice of the Good Life

At a hotel in Greece, I was fascinated by the glass elevator and the little glimpses of the grounds that could be seen between the wooden slats at the back of it whilst the lift was in motion.

There are some photos that leave a vivid memory of what it took to capture them. And when it came to choosing an image for this week’s challenge, this shot jumped to mind.

… The First Step

September 18th, 2005

Mum & Dad
Dear Mum & Daddi,

As I age, I gain a clearer perception of you as people; a better understanding of the seriousness with which you undertook your role as parents; and a greater appreciation for the efforts you put into raising your children.

And now, as I sit writing this on the other side of the world from all I know, I am filled with wonder at the courage and the care you showed in your parenting: for I am here because of you.

Unexpected Interactions

There is a delight in observing how people interact with their environment that has had me enjoying the act of ‘people watching’ for years.

Now that I am learning the art of photography, I find myself trying to capture such moments with the lens; seeing if I can translate them to film.

Journeying Home

This week’s challenge is to share our interpretation of “on the move”.

I chose this image as it is one of the few photos I’ve managed to capture where the motion is intended.
