You know how there are some smells that you would recognise from 20 paces?
Ones so distinctive that you wouldn’t be able to say how old you were when you first identified it, but which are recorded in the memory card of your nasal passages?
Well marijuana is one of those smells for me.

It is always daunting meeting other people’s family.
There you are, intent on making the right impression because you don’t want to cause offense (and not get invited back): so you try to remember your manners (or else your parent’s shame will haunt your dreams forever) and try not to make the friend who extended the invite in the first place regret their kindness.
But you are always going to be on uncertain ground when your teeth and eyes are as white as mine are.

Sculpture on Lily Pond
This photo was taken at the City Botanic Gardens (Brisbane, Australia). The water was hidden by the proliferation of lily pads, but I like how the man’s posture reflects that of the birds beside him. It’s as if at any moment, the three of them will jump out of the water and take to the skies.
